I got everything cleaned up for a collector viewing today. Floors scrubbed, cobwebs removed, and the usual Mexico garage-studio critters sent on their way. I love a clean studio… it just never seems to last long!

Second sweep of paint going down!
I work wet on wet, slowly building depth and atmosphere in thin layers. Right now it’s all about getting the water right-the darkest passages, subtle shifts in value and the feeling of light moving through the ocean.
I spend a lot of time squinting at the canvas. It helps me see the shapes that matter and the passages that transform the image from a painting into something more cinematic.

This Timelapse shows the first sweep of oil paint going down on a 60” x 90” canvas. It takes multiple layers to create the feeling of light suspended in water… about 45 percent there.

From my series Salt & Sea.

This is the second work in my new series and honestly, these paintings have been pushing me in ways I didn’t expect!

They live somewhere between control and surrender.

I begin by creating my own digital reference in Procreate, sometimes spending weeks adjusting color, movement, atmosphere, transparency, and structure before I ever touch the canvas.
Even then, once the oil paint starts moving, everything changes again. Some areas evolve, exactly as planned… others completely fight me and force new decisions.

Now I’m working up the nerve to begin the next piece:

Bigger scale. Bigger risk.

What makes this one so special is that I met the collector while live painting in the pool at The Viceroy. We spoke about what draws people toward certain pieces of art and the emotional connection behind collecting. Two days after returning home, she purchased the piece.

Now I will go back in-refining, adjusting, pulling out areas that need more clarity and pushing others deeper. Building color slowly, letting the surface open up. Working in oil always asks for patience… it reveals itself in layers.
I’ve explored a lot of directions, but I keep coming back to this-water and light. It’s something I can’t seem to move away from so I will follow this nudge.

Getting started on some big panels… 3 total however I just have the base coat on 2 here. I had to work fast in acrylic because it’s warm here and needless to say it’s a tad tricky trying to get the lighter colors to line up. I will figure it out as I progress!🤪
